Thrive at home: Gustav Broström

In Betonggruvan’s mini interview series we explore what makes people thrive at home.

Today we met Gustav Broström who’s (among a lot of things) a beauty and still life expert, we love his hashtags #gustavsstilleben and #brostrombeauty. Follow him on @gustavbrostrom and @gustavsloppis for great inspiration! Now let’s hear about his favorit clay pot and slow sundays at home.

What is your favourite item in your home and why is it so?

My fave item right now is my huge clay pot/work of art by Kakan Hermansson. Not only because it’s a great piece with great colors but also because it hides all unwanted things like lighters, spare candles and other small stuff. It goes so very well with my 1920’s bust of a young boy and some mid-century pottery. I’m also very much in love with my ever-growing collection of busts, statues and torsos. They work well in a group and gives my 70’s flat a bourgeois touch which I love.

How did it become yours?

When I worked at ELLE Magazine I came in contact with Kakan which is an influencer and has a beauty podcast. She suggested me as a guest in her podcast and the rest is history. I fell in love with her pottery and the naivety it has. She knows color and anti-shapes. I asked if I could buy a piece. The bust next to it was purchased at Myrorna and is the most expensive thing I have ever bought/will buy at Myrorna. I saw it in their “fancy vitrine” and fell in love. He was the spitting image of my maternal grandfather as a young boy. The bust was not signed but had some age and great aesthetic value so I bought it.

When do you feel your very best at home?

Slow Sundays. Listening to Khurangbin, ironing my shirts, rearranging my flea market finds and vacuuming my flat. Perhaps taking an extra nap. I dabble in beauty on my Instagram and I love the slow Sundays when I do still lifes for hours, placing dried fruits and fresh cut flowers in weird and magical combinations next to perfumes and creams.

What do you want to recommend?

I want to recommend Vasastan (and of course Sibirien). These neighborhoods are quiet but lovely. Antique shops, great restaurants and a lot of parks. People find this part of Stockholm boring but it’s subtle hip. Röda Bergen, Atlas and everything in between makes me feel at home.
